Making Memories Slice

At CHA this summer I was a lucky winner of the brand new die cutting machine, the Slice. I was so excited to win but had to wait until the end of October to receive it. It was definitely worth the wait. This is the first electronic die-cut machine I have ever owned so I am by no means an expert but so far I am very happy with it.

In my opinion here are it’s strengths:

-Price. At $150 MSRP it is affordable. You can sometimes find it on sale (like Memorable Seasons Black Friday sale when it was 30% off!) The design cards hold 100-150 images and some have 2 to 3 different alphabets and retail for $40 MSRP.

-Easy learning curve. It is simple to operate. My 10 year old loves to use it.

-Cutting Mat is infinitely reusable. The Slice comes with a 6X6 glass mat but you can purchase a 12X12 for around $20. You simply paint on a tacky adhesive (included in the starter kit) to keep the paper in place while you cut and wash it off the mat when you’re done.

-Portability. It is lightweight, compact and can be used cordless.

-Fully Self-Contained. This product does not need to be hooked to a computer. It is fully rechargeable and a charge lasts for 1 1/2 to 2 hrs of cutting. It can also be used while plugged in.

-Cut Anywhere. This is a great feature for making window cards and it is fun to use the negative space in your projects.

Weaknesses:

-It only cuts up to 4 inches. For the most part this hasn’t been a problem but there have been a couple of times that I wish it cut larger sizes.

-It is time consuming to cut out individual letters for titles. I have the 12x12 mat on order and this will make it easier as I won’t have to reposition the paper as often.

-The spatula should have been included in the starter kit. It is necessary to get designs off of the cutting mat.

-Holding it down – for some people this is a big con. It doesn’t bother me. While the machine is working you need to “lightly” hold on to it. If it is not held steady your paper will not be cut properly. The machine cuts quickly.

Christmas Decorations using scrap supplies

I am sure that many of you have already discovered lots of uses for your scrap supplies other than the traditional layouts and cards. Because I wanted to take part in a project called World Wide Ornament Drop, I set out to find some different ways to use my supplies to make some ornaments that a "non-scrappy" person would actually hang on their tree.
I bought a package of six clear glass ornaments at Michaels. I gathered up some alcohol ink, some Heidi Swapp tape, some self adhesive bling, some flowers and some stickles. I also have a bottle of gold glass liner. I really intended to try my hand at heat embossing on the glass but could not find my versa-mark ink. Do you know where I put it? Anyway, I put a few together really quickly to show you some samples. I can think of lots of other pretty simple ideas, too. If you have a cricut, you could cut small shapes from vinyl and stick them on the glass. You could shred some paper and fill the ornament. You could pour some acrylic paint inside the ornament and swirl it around to make an abstract looking ornament. There are lots of possibilities. I'd love to see some of your ideas.
Let's get back to the World Wide Ornament Drop. This weekend, I made this ornament. I attached the tag that Creating Keepsakes provided and put it in a small gift bag. Today, as I drove toward my office, I looked for a bus stop that did not have anyone waiting and where I could pull over and park close by. The reason I needed to park close by is because it is FREEZING here today. LOL I left my little gift on the bench and drove away. It should be fun to see if the person who finds it actually goes to the web site.

"Make 'em Match" Lettering...

Hello all! Last week as I sat down to work on my December Daily Album, I realized I had a problem...

My lovely red AC felt thickers did not match my equally lovely MM Fa-La-La red polka dot paper. What is a girl to do?

You can see in the photo below how bright the Thickers are compared to the paper.

So, I grabbed my standard "make it match" tools, as seen below. I also got the little star you see for my "practice" piece.


Here is what you do...

1. Decide what shade your letters are lacking. Gather up a couple markers and ink pads to experiment with.

2.Dab ink from a stamp pad, or lightly run a marker across your practice piece.

3. Check the results against your paper or whatever you are trying to match, and choose your marker, pad, etc. accordingly.

As you can see, I liked the results from my brown ink pad best. The black marker was too dark, casting more of a grey tone. The number two is still the original color in this photo so you can compare the change the ink gave. Subtle? Yes, but to anyone who likes things "just so" it makes a difference!

I hope this helps you to see that just because a letter is a shade off, whether it is chipboard, felt, or a sticker, you CAN make it work! :)

our December Guest Designer

We wanted to welcome Stacy{scrappymom123} with a special blog post dedicated to her! She has been gracing our online community with her awesome scrapbook pages since March. I asked her a few questions so we could all learn a little more about her and her views on this hobby.

How long have you been scrapbooking and what got you started?

About 10 years. Around the time I got maried and started having kids, my mil got me started. I have always been artsy and crafty. In highschool, I was getting a's in art class, the only class I would get a's lol!

What are some of your favorite products?

Heidi Swapp block alphabet letters love those, hoard them well!! I have been buying a lot of Making Memories lately. I'm really loving the new lines they have come out with. The papers are gorgoeus!! I love everything Maya Road as well!

How many layouts do you finish in a typical month?

Oh, I have been bad! I have done many more layouts this year then ever before, 20 some months and I do alot of mini albums.

What is your favorite blog for inspiration?

I love challenge blogs! SALT, OLW, and Unpubbed.

Where do you see yourself, aside from scrapbooking, in ten years?

Hopefully we would like to be on an acreage with more family time. Hopefully have done some traveling, maybe working a little bit more then now. More organized, with more of my scrapbook dreams come true. I would like to do more missionary work. Another house or something close!

Christmas portraits

After receiving a Target sales ad in the mail, I decided I liked their idea and ran with it! On the cover of the ad was some beautifully wrapped packages and a family galivanting all around them in a room with crazy red wallpaper...which looked strikingly similar to the wrapping paper.

Off to Target I went. I bought two rolls of wrapping paper that were way out of my usual wrapping paper budget{$1/roll. Hey, it goes in the garbage!}. However, the $9 I spent on wrapping paper was way cheaper than any portrait studio would charge for Christmas pics.

A roll of scotch tape, some wrapping paper and my trusty camera and we have ourselves some family portraits!

After completing this little project, I learned a few things:

#1: wrapping paper with glitter is not recommended, nor is reflective wrapping paper of any kind. It tends to pick up the photographer{and all other background elements} in the reflection!

#2: buying pretty wrapping paper does not guarantee that your kids will stop making faces long enough to get a good shot.

#3: buy 2 rolls of each pretty wrapping paper that you chose. 20 square feet is not as much as it seems once hung upon the wall.
